Genital warts  are  sexually transmitted diseases , caused by a human papillomavirus ( HPV ).

 There are many types of HPV , but only a few of them cause  genital warts . HPV is spread very strongly by skin-to-skin contact. In fact, HPV is so common that the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) identifies that most people of sexually active age have HPV at some point in time. Besides, because HPV is spread very strongly by skin-to-skin contact, and because there are many types of HPV, there is a risk of exposure to many different types of HPV.

However, not every HPV infection will cause an illness (like  genital warts ). Fortunately, in most cases the virus is eliminated by the body's immune system and does not cause illness.

All sexually active people are at risk for HPV infection  , but  genital warts are  common in people who:

• Under 30 years old.
• Smoke.
• Has  a weak immune system .
• There is a history of abuse.
• Having a mother infected with HPV during childbirth.

HPV is very contagious, and the risk of exposure to many different types of HPV is enormous. So far, it has been identified that HPV is the cause of several types of cancer, such as  cervical cancer ,  penile cancer ,  anal cancer , ...

When symptoms of genital warts appear  , get medical attention as soon as possible. Genital warts are soft papillae, usually appear on the genitals, genital area, mouth, lips, tongue, buttocks, thighs, ...  Genital warts  are the same color of skin or darker, The papillary apical part may look like cauliflower, the surface may be smooth or rough. The warts can appear alone or in clusters. Sometimes the warts are not visible, but there are other manifestations such as: unusual vaginal discharge, itching, burning, bleeding, ...
